I'm going to be sharing with you my experience with a torrent just yesterday. I'm also going to rant.

So, yesterday I downloaded a torrent. Just a simple 500mb file, the comments were good, the seeder/leecher ratio was good. So I proceeded to download it. So, after downloading, I did a virus scan (which I do with everything I download), and it was clean. So I went on to install it.

Unusually, it took a really long time to open the setup. While opening it, my anti-virus program detected a trojan called "Inject.fzr", and it was on the svchost file. I denied access, and I continued to wait for the installation file to open. I assumed it was a false positive, as there were about 3 to 4 comments saying that the torrent was clean. After a minute or so, I started to feel uneasy over that trojan.

I went to Google the trojan's name, and for a moment I was relieved. There was only one result found about that trojan, and that usually means that it is a false positive. Still, I went ahead to click that search result. What did I see? That trojan, "Inject.fzr", was added to the database just two days ago, on 14 October. Remember I downloaded the torrent on 15 October. Then I went to check when the torrent was uploaded. It was uploaded on 14 October.

"Something's not right here..."

Thoughts went through my mind. I've heard of bogus torrents before, where there might be unrealistic numbers of downloads/leechers/seeders for that file. I took at look at the statistics. A little over 4000 downloads, 400+ seeders and 100+ leechers. It doesn't seem wrong, does it? The thing is, there were about 10-20 other torrents that offered the same exact file. Why would this torrent be so special to have such good statistics? Just one day after uploading, it has the most seeders out of all the other similar torrents.

That's it, its a fake. But should I continue installing it? My anti-virus program is rather powerful.

Well, in the end, I decided to stop the installation, and delete the file. I did a full virus scan, and my computer was clean. I'm wondering if I should comment and warn others of this torrent, sneakily containing a trojan that is hardly a week old. Smart bastard, whoever uploaded that file.
