I’ll be honest…I’m a huge fan of Oatmeal, and this comic made me laugh and cringe at the same time. Laugh because a lot of the statements are dead on. Cringe, not only because a lot of the statements are dead on, but because it’s incredibly unfortunate that THAT is what a lot of people immediately think of when they hear the word “Christian”.
I’m a Christian. I’m also a scientist. I happen to believe in God, in science, in birth control, in equal rights. I don’t parade my beliefs around for the world to see or try to force them on others, but if someone point blank asks me what I believe, I’m honest with them. I’m one of those people that you describe at the end - someone who finds strength in their faith and uses it as fuel to (at least try to) live a good life. Yes, Christians like me do actually exist. We are out there. Unfortunately, we tend to epitomize the term “stuck between a rock and a hard place” - we have non-Christians assuming that we are all bible-banging nutcases who believe in fairy hokum, and we’ve got ultra-Christians telling us that we’re heathens and that we are “not Christian enough”. (btw, I’ll give a cookie to the first person who can effectively explain to me what constitutes the correct degree of Christian-ness).
I’m not trying to slam Oatmeal’s comic…like I said, I actually agreed with a whole lot of what he had to say. It’s just unfortunate that a few bad seeds seem to spoil the pot. It’s like equating all Muslims with terrorists. Not all Christians are Bible-banging leftwing nutcases intent on shoving Jesus down your throat. Unfortunately, we just tend to get clustered with them, which is a damn shame.

I wonder why Christians in the West have this stereotype. It’s sad.

Oh and of course, there’s a big hoo haa over the comic. I notice many rebuttals don’t even make sense, or get the point of the comic.

Most of the unhappiness about the comic arises because they think that the comic is attacking religion itself. But no, read the comment I quoted above, that is what the comic really is about.
