I just completed a skirmish game of Dawn of War: Soulstorm, and geez, it was good. It was a 2v2, my team having two Imperial Guards and the enemy having a Chaos and Eldar. Good battles happen occasionally, but what made me want to put this screenshot up is the number of deaths.

That is 1399 units killed in the course of battle. I just calculated, and that is half a unit killed every second. To make it sound more imaginable, that's one unit killed every two seconds.

October 11, 2008. It was a great battle. The Imperial Guards had the upper hand early game, swarming their opponents with their countless number of conscripts. The Imperial Guard stood their ground at the critical point on the battlefield, gunning down any intruder who dared to invade their territory.

But alas! Their foes soon gained the upper hand, as they started to roll out their heavy machines onto the battlefield. The Imperial Guards had no choice but to abandon their posts, and fled like chickens. The enemy soon knocked on their door, with the sour smell of death lingering near the headquarters.

"Where's our artillery support?" A desperate Imperial Guardsman yelled.

More and more soldiers started falling, limbs were mercilessly sliced off helpless soldiers with a fountain of blood flying beautifully in the air. The squad's morale inevitably broke, and their fighting capabilities rendered useless. The squad's commissar, who lived by the motto, "fear ensures loyalty", shot dead one of his squad members. Freaked out, a surge of adrenaline pumped the squad back up, knowing that they'll either die fighting the enemy, or die being a coward. As countless number of men were being sent to the frontlines to hold the enemy, a similar number of men falling to their deaths.

Suddenly, a familiar "boom" pierced the air, followed by the familiar sound of heavy bolters. Bodies of the speedy Eldar flew into the air, performing a wonderful circus act for all to see. The cavalry had arrived. Two Leman Russ tanks and a Baneblade stood majestically behind the relieved infantry, raining destruction onto their enemies. The Chaos and Eldar armies soon thinned, and encouraged by the sight, the Imperial Guardsman pursued the remaining few who seemed intent on fighting back.

The Baneblade is the Imperial Guard's oldest tank, forged on Mars itself. It is equipped with a battle cannon paired with a coaxial autocannon, a demolisher cannon, 3 twin-linked heavy bolters, and 2 lascannons. That is a whopping 11 barrels of destructive fury on a single tank (each set of heavy bolters has two barrels).

Once the enemies were dead, the Imperial Guard regrouped, ready to lay siege to their enemies. Three squads of Imperial Guardsmen, one squad of Kasrkin, one squad of Ogryns, two Leman Russ tanks, one Baneblade, and three Hellhounds set off towards their enemies base. As the enemies base loomed in the distance, the Imperial Guard were attacked yet again. It was a small strike force, but they put up a fight nonetheless. Suddenly, a great red horned demon flew over the heads of the Imperial Guardsmen, landing beside the Baneblade. It was the feared demon, the Bloodthirster.

This freak of nature stands 30 feet tall, and it lives only to destroy and kill, nothing else matters to it. By dropping its axe on a mere human is enough to turn you into a pancake.

The Bloodthirster landed with a dull thud, emitting out a shockwave that sent the infantry flying in all directions. Although it didn't kill them, this shockwave made a deep dent on their morale. The whole contingent focused fire on the hideous demon, hoping to bring it down before any serious damage could be done. The Bloodthirster swung his ridiculously giant axe at the Baneblade, causing some superficial dents on the Baneblade's tough armour. The Bloodthirster was starting to show signs of weakening, and it soon fell on its knees, unable to continue in battle. The final blow was dealt on it, and its spirit rose into the air, leaving behind nothing else but a patch of blood.

The Imperial Guard soon reached the Eldar's base. Unfortunately, the base was nowhere to be seen. The crafty Eldar, masters of speed and stealth, had managed to stealth their whole base before the Imperial Guard could lay waste to it. An invisible turret shot at the Imperial Guardsmen, and soon a radar scan from the Imperial Headquarters revealed the base. Hell arrived on the battlefield that day... and the buildings started crumbling one by one, turning into a giant pile of unidentifiable rubble. Nearby, the other Imperial Guard contingent was laying waste to the more heavily defended Chaos base, with its countless number of anti-vehicle turrets built around the area. Laughter could be heard from the Baneblade as the turret's missiles started to tickle the tank.

The Eldar and Chaos put up a strong defense, but it did not prove to be enough. The Imperial Guard emerged victorious, and they trotted back to the headquarters in their blood-stained uniforms.
