Hellgate: London Demo

This game made big waves even before being released. Made by the creators of Diablo, this game is easily the most anticipated game of 2007. Does it live up to its hype? I can't comment on that, because I've only played a silly little single player demo.

Unless you've been living under a rock, you should at least know that this game is based in post-apocalyptic London, 2038. Apparently the undead have arrived in London and there's this battle between the humans (us) and the undead.

This single player MMORPG (odd huh?) demo only allows you to play two classes, the blademaster, who uses melee attacks which deal insane damage, and the marksman, who uses guns to do weaker but long range attacks. You'll get to personalise your character, just like in any MMORPG. Change your hairstyle, colour, height, skin colour, etc. After that, you're thrown into the game with a short and simple tutorial. This tutorial simply teaches you the basics, such as reading incoming transmissions, how to attack, how to use the map and enter different areas. You continue on with your first quest a minute later.

This is the interesting part of the game. Its not the usual point-and-click-to-attack type of MMORPGs we've seen for the past 1000 MMORPGs. As a marksman, you enter the FPS of play style and you attack like any old FPS game. That's also how you'll be walking around. As a blademaster, you're only restricted to the third person shooter view. Attacking technique is somewhat like Oblivion or Rakion, except that you can't use you shield - you click, and your character swings his sword. This has definitely pushed the standard of fighting in MMORPGs one step higher.

There are only 4 proper quests in the game, and they aren't very spectacular. They're the usual kill "x" amount of zombies, collect "y" amount of crap. That's how it has always been, and I don't think it'll be changing for a really long time. If you've played Diablo, the quest where you have to get the little kid's missing leg will be very familiar to you.

By the way, the whole map is broken into smaller areas. You'll go from area to area by entering these portals. If you enter an area which is not some sort of outpost or town, you'll enter your own private area, unless accompanied by party members. Exactly like Guild Wars. This isn't my information, you can't experience it in the demo.

The graphics are satisfactory, pretty well detailed enough, but not lifelike. There's no music at all, or I happened to have not heard it. The sound isn't amazing, its just repetitive and boring. I've read around in forums that the game is filled with bugs, but so far I've only experienced 2 bugs. One of them is when playing a blademaster, and you click to attack too much, the character will never stop swinging. Kind of hard to walk around like that. Opening the closing the inventory solved the problem. The other bug is when you talk to a NPC, he'll say more than 1 thing at a time, so all you hear is some jumbled up stuff.

Oh yes, as I was saying on my other post, the storyline for the demo is bad. They just ripped out a few pages out of the book and gave it to the demo. They should at least give 1 complete story, or end it well in suspense. I actually had to go online to see if my demo was bugged or whether it had ended. It ended. Wasted my time running around London.

So the full game got released today. The numerous bugs and glitches mentioned by others had better been fixed, because it has really made people go crazy.

Overall, I really think people should stop rating the demo as an FPS shooter game, but an MMORPG instead. It isn't supposed to be a good AI which attacks you, it isn't supposed to have a replay value to the demo, you complete the quests and that's it. Of course, the physics of the game could really be improved. More gore should be good too, since it already has a "mature" ERSB rating. Running around slashing zombies should slice through them, or even whacking them a few metres away.

Hellgate: London E3 2007 Trailer (3:18)

Changed video player. Can't seem to upload any videos on Youtube for some reason. Video quality is better anyway.

Graphics: 8
Sound:6
Gameplay: 8.7
Lasting Appeal: 4 (its a demo)
Overall: 8.5

Its hard to rate a MMORPG based on a demo. I mean, if I really rate it as a demo, it really deserves about a 7 or even 6.5 or so. But if I imagine what the full game will be like by playing the demo, the above score might be appropriate.

Also, let me make it clear that graphics and sound hardly do not affect the overall rating for all the games I've reviewed. The only time it will affect the overall rating is when either they are truly breathtaking, or totally an eyesore. It just shows what I look for in a game =).

Its been rather busy for the past 1 week or so. O-levels started on the 22nd, and they're amazingly relaxing. So far, only the Geography Elective paper has worried me a little, and I'm not really happy with my storyline for English composition (I should have fast forwarded to the climax, dragged too long to 5 pages. As a result, a rather bad climax).

I really have to thank God for the A-Math paper which is miraculously and ridiculously easy. When I saw my preliminary exam results for A-Math, I decided to give up on it. I just told myself that I won't practice too much, so the ONLY thing I did for preparation is the June 2007 paper. I could do every single question in the October 2007 paper. Wow.

Other then that, the O-levels have gone very smoothly. Just a little bit worried for my Social Studies because there's so much to memorise. And I'm obliged to get an A1 for my Physics.

I got hold of World in Conflict a week ago, and I just completed it in 9 hours, over a span of 4 days. Just like that. It was meant for me to play during the holidays. Ah well. Great game, I'll be reviewing it soon.

I got hold of the Hellgate: London demo today. While downloading, I read through some forums, looking the people's first impression of the game. Things didn't look good for Hellgate: London.

In fact, I completed the demo just an hour ago. It was a little short, rather abrupt, unpredicted ending. Heck, it wasn't even an ending at all. They just cut the first few pages of a story and pasted in there, ending in between a chapter. I had to go online to see if... all right, I've switched into reviewing mode. I'll continue in the review.

Unreal Tournament 2004 Demo

This demo is undoubtedly the only demo which you can play for over 50 hours. The main game is great, and the demo is good. What's so great about a demo?

Game demos usually let you play one or two missions in the game, giving you a little insight about the storyline and what the whole game is roughly about. The Unreal Tournament 2004 Demo tries to entice you in a whole new different way.

All this demo brings to you is: multiplayer games. That's right, only multiplayer games. Of course you can play them with bots, but they're kind of irritating. The multiplayer games are so popular, there are still over a hundred demo servers for you to play in, although about 70% of these servers are either empty or bot dominated. That still leaves you with about 30 servers to play in. Those who own the full game can also join the demo servers, but you can't do otherwise. The demo is already 4 years old, by the way.

There are a few game modes, but onslaught and capture the flag modes are the most popular. There's only either 1 or 2 maps for each mode, but you get the full function of each map.

This game is a little like Halo, with futuristic weaponry and vehicles. Fly up into the sky with a raptor, go blasting things into pieces with a tank, do quick hit and runs with a manta, and so on.

There's something in this game that I find really amusing. Whatever you type, it will be spoken. Apparently they have some sort of technology which can read what you type. They also recognise some cyber-talk like "lol", "brb" and many others. They'll read it out like "laugh out loud". They're monotonous, and its hilarious when you try to make them speak Chinese.

The graphics aren't very good, but at least they aren't an eyesore. The models are well detailed, but they are not smoothly done. Sound is satisfactory, as the sound produced from a specific object will most of the time be the same sound you always hear. Not much variation there.

Overall, its a perfect demo. Its so fun and good, I bet lots of people settled on the demo and didn't even buy the full game at all. Give it a go, its only a little under 300mb.

Alright its way too funny.

Oh when you’re down and looking for some cheering up
Then just head right on up to the candy mountain cave
When you get inside you will find yourself a cheery land
Such a happy and joy filled and perky merry land
They’ve got lollipops and gummy drops and candy things
Oh so many things that will brighten up your day
It’s impossible to wear a frown in candy town
It’s the Mecca of love the candy cave
They’ve got jellybeans and coconuts with little hats
Candy rats, chocolate bats it’s a wonderland of sweets
Ride the candy train to town and hear the candy band
Candy bells it’s a treat as they march across the land
Cherry ribbons stream across the sky into the ground
Turn around it astounds it’s a dancing candy tree
In the candy cave the imagination runs so free
so now Charlie will you please go into the cave.

All right, its official. My class has gone mad.

Just last Wednesday my class sang Happy Birthday to (how to you spell his name?) 13 times. It was at least once every lesson. Today, it was happy birthday to every teacher who came into the classroom today. What next?

Then there's the photo taking mania. I understand that because its the last week of official school.

Then its just 2 more weeks to O-levels. I have no idea what to do. I'm going to complete whole ten year series for each of the 3 sciences next week. Call me nuts. There's this weird thing about doing work at home. Everything I do seems to be done 2 times faster.
